Here are a couple of shots I got of some deer. Notice my strong use of the rule of thirds for the composition. The bodies of the deer are in the center of the frame, however, their heads are placed in those hot zones created by the intersecting 3rd lines.
Also note that in the bottom photo, I gave a little bit of extra room in front of the deer than behind to give it the room to walk, which enhances the feeling of forward movement a little.
When shooting animals... as in photographing them... you want to always focus on the eyes, just like you would a person. Eyes are always the strongest part of a photograph, whether it be a deer, a dog, a lion or a person. We'll get into that more when we study portraiture.
